AnnaCamila	#TheBreakUpEP #RPMChallenge	Indie, Hip-Hop	LP (10 tracks or 35 minutes)	I went through a break up right at the beginning of this challenge so I had a lot to talk about and this became the most cathartic and healing thing I could have hoped for. It clarified my feeling and perspective, reminded me of my value and what I deserve. It also served as an opportunity to say the things to my ex that I wanted to say but knew wouldn't be heard... It took me 4 days to write the majority and then I spent the rest of the month tinkering with mixing (this is my first time producing, engineering performing and mixing an album without any outside help.. except Lando throwing that perfect verse in to round out MTJL and give the project the response perspective). This year, "Ten Years" is what I came up with. ...I went a little overboard with the whole "Ten" thing. Ten Years: I started with the idea that each song could represent a year of a decade. I figured With the 2010's just recently ending (and my 20's along With it) that decade would be easy to write about. So this album basically summarizes some aspect of each other those years. David Thorley	The Moth Paper at Box End	Country, Pop	LP (10 tracks or 35 minutes)	When I was a student, J.H. Prynne was a lecturer approaching retirement age. He fascinated me: eloquent, esoteric, always unconventional. His lectures were curious digressive affairs and he had a powerful aversion to utilitarian teaching rooms and chairs that stacked. His poems are famous for their density and obliquity. To my knowledge I have never understood one. But I’ve always wanted to and the collected ‘Prynne’ sits on my bookshelf teasing me with its strange possibilities. For this year's RPM, I culled words and phrases from Prynne poems to use as songwriting prompts. I'm not sure this has at all helped me to understand Prynne's work, but these ten tracks are the upshot even so. ghostcycles	Portal/Vortex	Field Recording, Experimental	LP (10 tracks or 35 minutes)	I wound up with an 11-track set of recordings, after initially registering for the 'EP' length goal. One of the tracks ('Shelliverse') is a full song, flushed out from a song idea I recorded on my phone in a bathroom last fall. Three tracks are edits from an out-there experimental jam session my friend and I had on a casio keyboard, drum machine, and bass, and the rest are a mix of field recordings, sound bytes, and guitar-based musical ideas I layered together. I really enjoyed getting into the idea of 'place' for this album, and focusing more on the environment around me as inspiration, as well as collaboration, though I ultimately did the final compiling and editing on my own. I used a Tascam four-track as a starting point and had fun just plugging in different microphones, a loop pedal etc and seeing how far I could get. I also made some digital recordings around the area where I live, as well as on a trip to the desert. The whole thing was really just an excuse to drag all my music stuff out, nerd out about audio and recording and once I started, everything became a new idea! My partner and I recorded air vents and coyotes. I got some friends to harmonize on a little song idea with me. It was fun! I mainly made the album to get myself to engage in the process of music and audio again after not doing much since last year's RPM! But it is also dedicated to friends who spent time with me being creative this month, and long-distance friends who support my music. I realized as I was publishing the album that this is the ten-year anniversary of me using the artist name 'ghostcycles'. Ott's Trashpile	Augmented Folk Blues Field Recordings	Blues, Field Recording	LP (10 tracks or 35 minutes)	As a second generation junkman and working musician for the last "fifty-some years," Ott Tarner has experienced his fair share of ups and downs. The songs he performs are directly inspired by what he has seen and lived "from both sides of paying the bills," as he puts it. Captured outside, under the front awning of his workshop in New Hoyle, Oklahoma, the listener is given the experience of being right there in the moment. Traffic noise, bird calls, the jingle of his dog's collar, and the sounds of Ott's Pabst Blue Ribbon beer cans being opened, drank, and tossed into the collection bin were all left intact. Though he played the country blues, rags, and hokum tunes he's entertained house parties and juke joints with for more than half a century, Mr. Tarner informed the Shive Records field team he wanted his songs to appeal to a younger audience. To honor this request, the raw field recordings were taken to LoFi Shit studio where digital beats and rhythm sections were overdubbed. The resulting product is an album of rough, raw, and raunchy acoustic recordings mixed with Hip-Hop and Mississippi Hill Country style studio production. Rather than have these recordings released under his legal name, he wanted to use Ott's Trashpile because "that's what people call this place—probably have for 80 years." (referring to the workshop he inherited from his father) Ott gave his full approval upon hearing the final mixes and has high hopes to "gain some fame on the computer." I also wanted to stick to one DAW (Ableton),because last year, switching among DAWs for different parts of the process was a huge pain. I set out to make a stripped down set of art songs using piano and voice. It didn't work. I followed the sounds and ended up in my usual dark experimental rock-electronica territory. My objective was to jumpstart my creative process, and while I only (haha) completed about 45 minutes of music out of my goal of 100m, the seeds of dozens more songs and musical ideas have been planted. Day 1 I just picked up my guitar and the first progression I played just became the jumping off point. After that I just spent my lunch breaks each day noodling around and jotting down lyrics. Then I spent the last three days actually recording all the instruments by myself, doing vocals, and quickly mixing the ten songs. I definitely made this record for myself, just to force myself to be creative. I'm an old middle-aged guy who was so terrified at the thought of anyone hearing whatever awful song I wrote that it had been almost twenty years since I even attempted to write anything. I realize it may not be terribly good, but I'm so grateful that the RPM Challenge exists and gave me an excuse to be creative musically for the first time in what feels like a lifetime. Walter and I met during the time of the 1st RPM challenge February has always been a time of renewal and change for us. Our daughter Wednesday, now 7, was born in February. We’ve premiered plays, moved houses, lost jobs, got new jobs, been on tour, witnessed weddings, shoveled feet of snow, mourned losses; and yet, we’ve released an album every February every year of the challenge. No matter what February has brought – we’ve made time to make music Two years ago, the world was just hearing the beginnings of what will likely define the lived-experience for all of humanity for a generation. Our way of being in the world, of creating, of supporting ourselves, of fellowship changed drastically. We still made music. No more getting together in the same physical space to create. We still made music. No more hugs or high-fives or smoke-circles or bodies packed together exuding energy. We still made music. We’ve lost and gained so much this year and… WE STILL MADE MUSIC! Walter has continued BUNKER BUDS, a daily dystopian talk show dedicated to bringing joy in to the often bleak loneliness of quarantine. They have touched thousands of folks with hundreds of episodes dedicated to helping people see the good and the light of artistic fellowship. Let Yourself Love Yourself. PERMANENT FIRE is our 17th RPM offering. It’s a marker in time, a symbol of what we lost and also what we’ve gained. It points to our North Star, the time when we will all be together again, somewhere between starshine and clay.
